For nearly 25 years, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith had been the pulse-pounding heart of Sunset Boulevard, launching guests from 0 to 57 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds. The attraction has served as more than just a thrill ride; it’s been a testament to Disney’s ability to blend storytelling with white-knuckle excitement. As the only looping roller coaster in Walt Disney World, the attraction has maintained its status as a must-do experience for thrill-seekers, and is one of the best rides at Hollywood Studios.

While change is inevitable in theme parks, the retheme of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will mark the end of an era that helped define Disney’s Hollywood Studios for a generation of visitors. However, as with all Disney transformations, this ending opens the door to an exciting new chapter in the park’s story.

Meet the New Stars: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem

Concept art / poster showing Muppet characters in a Rock'n'RollerCoaster vehicle

Get ready to rock out with some of the most colorful characters in the Muppets universe! Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are taking over as the new headliners of Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ premier coaster experience. This iconic band brings their unmistakable energy and quirky charm to Sunset Boulevard, featuring the charismatic Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, the wild-haired Animal on drums, the groovy Floyd Pepper on bass, the multitalented Janice on lead guitar, and the saxophone virtuoso Zoot.

The advertisement poster for the new attraction also shows Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy teaming up with music’s biggest stars for rockin’ music.

Since their debut in 1970s debut on The Muppet Show, the Electric Mayhem has been the beating heart of the Muppets’ musical world. Their eclectic style, blending rock, funk, and blues, has entertained audiences across generations. From performing in the original Muppet Movie to their recent starring role in “The Muppets Mayhem” series on Disney+, these felt-and-fur musicians have consistently proven their ability to deliver show-stopping performances that appeal to both kids and adults alike.

Disney’s decision to bring Electric Mayhem to Hollywood Studios doesn’t seem like a random choice—it’s merely a strategic move that perfectly aligns with the park’s entertainment focus. The band’s energetic performances and larger-than-life personalities make them natural successors to Aerosmith, maintaining the rock ‘n’ roll spirit while introducing a fresh, family-friendly dynamic. The Muppets’ timeless appeal and ability to blend humor with genuine musical talent create an attraction that can entertain multiple generations simultaneously.

This retheme also makes sense due to the closure of Muppet*Vision 3D. Disney closed the beloved attraction to make way for new rides and shows in a Monsters, Inc. land. The move not only honors the Muppets’ legacy by making sure they still have a place in Disney World; it also reinforces the park’s commitment to maintaining the franchise’s prominence in their theme park experiences.

The band’s takeover of the attraction promises to bring their signature blend of music, mayhem, and madcap adventure to one of Disney World’s most thrilling rides. With their history of breaking the fourth wall and engaging directly with audiences, guests can expect an immersive ride experience that captures the spontaneous energy and humor that has made Electric Mayhem a fan favorite for decades.

What’s Changing, What’s Staying

As opening approaches, we have a pretty good idea of what the Electric Mayhem retheme includes.

The fundamental thrills of this beloved coaster concept will remain—a high-end roller coaster with musical accompaniment.

Given the relatively short turnaround time, the track layout is almost certainly remaining the same. We’ve seen practically nothing to suggest any massive overhauls or completely new track systems that had been rumored in some circles. The current iconic launch system has been thrilling guests since 1999, making it one of the older rides in the park and a must-ride attraction for thrill-seekers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The entire themed experience surrounding the ride, however, is certain to change. The new storyline of the attraction has the Electric Mayhem prepping for their biggest-ever Hollywood concert.

Guests start their adventure at G-Force Records, the legendary rock and roll recording studio that was at the heart of the original Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith. We learn that Scooter’s uncle now owns the studio and we’ve been invited on a VIP tour. The Electric Mayhem are jamming in the studio and stagehand Scooter is trying desperately to get them to the concert venue on-time.

Eagle-eyed Muppet*Vision 3D fans might notice the audio engineers in the studio look suspiciously like members of the penguin orchestra from the 3D film.

Much like the original coaster, a fast LIMO (Lengthy Immediate Motion Object) makes sure everybody makes it to the show on time—but on perhaps a bit more white-knuckled ride than they expected.

The musical component, a crucial element of the original attraction, will naturally receive a complete overhaul to feature Electric Mayhem’s distinctive sound.

The soundtrack includes Muppety versions of mainstream songs, with a few well-known Musical Guest stars (and one poultry legend):

  • Born To Be Wild – The Electric Mayhem feat. Camilla the Chicken
  • Love Rollercoaster – The Electric Mayhem feat. Jennifer Hudson and Questlove
  • Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) – The Electric Mayhem feat. Def Leppard
  • Song 2 – The Electric Mayhem
  • Walking On Sunshine – The Electric Mayhem feat. Kelly Clarkson

You’ll also hear the Electric Mayhem performing Can You Picture That? as part of the overall experience.

Additional celebrity cameos (in the attraction queue) include:

  • Awkwafina
  • Danny Trejo
  • Darren Criss
  • John Stamos
  • Neil Patrick Harris
  • Travis Barker
  • Wayne Brady
  • Weird Al Yankovic
  • Yvette Nicole Brown

Given recent technological advancements in theme park attractions and the Muppets’ colorful aesthetic, guests can likely expect updated lighting, effects, and theming throughout the experience. Disney promises that the Hollywood scenery featured along the track will “feature a Muppet twist.”

One thing is certain: the heart-pounding thrills that made Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster a Hollywood Studios favorite will continue to excite guests when Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem take center stage.

When Will This Muppets Thrill-Ride Open?

Here’s the timeline as we know it:

  • Preshow of the current ride (Aerosmith) was discontinued in early December 2025
    • Ride itself remained open
  • The current ride (Aerosmith) was closed starting March 2, 2026
    • Last day of operation was March 1, 2026
  • The new ride (Muppets) opens May 26, 2026
    • Earlier, unannounced previews *may* be offered

Fan Reception and Community Response

The Disney community has been buzzing since the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster retheme announcement, and opinions are mixed. Scrolling through X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, you’ll find a mix of emotional farewells to Aerosmith and excited chatter about the Muppets taking over.

What’s particularly interesting is how different generations are reacting to the news. Younger Disney fans on TikTok seem thrilled about the Muppets connection, especially following the success of “The Muppets Mayhem” series on Disney+. Meanwhile, those who experienced the ride’s opening in 1999 are sharing their nostalgic memories.

The Final Jam Session

As Disney’s Hollywood Studios prepares to welcome Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem to their new rockin’ home, it’s clear that this transformation represents more than just a simple retheme.

While saying goodbye to Aerosmith marks the end of an incredible quarter-century run, the arrival of the Muppets promises to bring fresh energy and multi-generational appeal to one of Disney World’s most thrilling attractions. The combination of high-speed thrills with the Muppets’ signature humor and musical talent seems poised to create an experience that will have guests rushing back to Sunset Boulevard for years to come.
