Disney World is great….but don’t forget about Universal Orlando Resort!

Without question, Universal Orlando Resort is overshadowed by its neighbor and direct competitor: Walt Disney World. This shouldn’t come as a surprise because Disney is much larger and more established.

For those of us who’ve been to Disney World, we know how magical these vacations can be. Everyone should plan to spend at least 3 or 4 days at Disney to get the full experience. That said, let’s not forget about Universal Orlando right down the road! Universal Orlando, after all, is a theme park and entertainment resort complex that certainly holds its own weight and offers dozens of unique experiences and thrilling attractions that you won’t find at Disney.

Universal Orlando has two theme parks (Universal’s Island of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida), one water park (Volcano Bay),  an entertainment complex (Universal CityWalk Orlando), as well as many spectacular on-site hotels and resorts. And any discussion of Universal Orlando Resort would be remiss without mentioning The Wizarding World of Harry Potter themed environments.

Universal Orlando Resort is a vacation destination for epic family fun!

The park opened on June 7th, 1990, and is owned by NBCUniversal (Comcast).  It covers 541 acres and boasts an annual attendance of 21 million (2017).

Universal Studios Florida was opened on June 7, 1990, and is themed around the movies and television industry. Here guests can “ride the movies” as they experience the park’s exciting attractions and live shows.

Universal Studios Florida ranks as the 6th most attended theme park in the United States (10.2 million guests in 2017) and the ninth most attended theme park in the world.

Universal’s Islands of Adventure opened on May 28, 1999, as part of Universal Studios Florida’s expansion into what is now called Universal Orlando Resort. 

The park takes its guests on a journey of exploration as they embark on an adventure to a number of themed islands. With the addition of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010, the Islands of Adventure had its 7th island. Skull Island – themed after King Kong – became the 8th island to open ( July 13, 2016).  Islands of Adventure currently welcomes around 8.1 million guests annually and it ranks as the 7th most attended theme park in the USA and the 11th internationally.

Volcano Bay is Universal Orlando Resort’s water park. It opened on May 25, 2017, and replaced Wet ‘n Wild. Volcano Bay is themed around Krakatau, a 200-foot-tall artificial volcano that houses the tallest body slide in the USA (125 feet tall), and a variety of other water attractions.

CityWalk is Universal Orlando Resort’s shopping, dining, and entertainment district. It opened in 1999 as part of the transformation of Universal Studios Florida into Universal Orlando Resort. The area was formerly the Universal Studios parking lot and main entrance.
