Types of Adventures by Disney Trips
Before we look into the fully list of Adventures by Disney trips and where Adventures by Disney goes, it’s important to understand the types of Disney adventures offered. Some destinations are only offered as one particular type of trip, and the trip type/length can greatly affect the cost of the vacation and the type of experience you’ll have on it. Plus, knowing the type of trip you’re getting for your money can help you decide if it’s truly worth the price.
No matter the trip type, the fees charged typically cover transportation during the trip, activities, admission to paid venues on the itinerary, and some meals. Generally speaking, flights are not included in the cost; the only exception would be any mid-trip flights required on itineraries which start in one country and end in another. Gratuities (tipping), shopping/souvenirs, and any optional “on your own” activities (including some meals) are not included in the cost.
Adventures by Disney divides its trip types into a few major categories.
Land Adventures are the primary form of travel offered by Adventures by Disney since it began operating in 2005. The idea is simple… take the world-famous customer service, VIP treatment, and special personal touches of a Disney vacation and apply them to group guided travel all over the world.
These are not local tour companies with a license to use the Disney name; each trip is Disney-designed guided tour that is operated from start to finish by Disney Cast Members (employees). Disney provides Adventure Guides to lead groups of about 35-44 people through the selected destination countries and activities.
There are now dozens of trips offered under this banner, each ranging from 6-12 days.
The shorter Adventures by Disney Escape is a subset of Land Adventures. These trips follow the same general model as the longer land adventures, but instead focus on a more compact schedule of 2-5 days. The shorter timeline makes Escapes a great for families with limited vacation time. They’re also a popular pre- or post-cruise option for adding a bit of additional vacation time to an accompanying cruise reservation.
When the first Adventures by Disney River Cruise set sail in 2016, it marked a significant departure from the Land Adventures model that ABD had been using since its beginnings. Adventures by Disney’s River Cruises are not operated by Disney Cruise Line. Instead, the river cruises are chartered excursions on ships operated by AmaWaterways, an industry leader in luxury river cruising.
River Cruises offer many of the same elements of a Land Adventure, including dedicated Disney-employed Adventure Guides, family-friendly activities, and exclusive access to area attractions — but use a luxury river cruise ship as the primary “hotel” and means of travel for the trip.
Expedition Cruises are the newest addition to the Adventures by Disney portfolio, having first been offered in 2021. While River Cruises focus on the arts and culture of the European cities along that continent’s historic rivers, Expedition Cruises are all about exploring the jaw-dropping wonder of nature in exotic locales such as the Galápagos Islands or Antarctica.
In addition to Disney-employed Adventure Guides, these Disney expedition cruises also include the services of shipboard naturalists to help tell the story of the wonders on display. Guests are not traveling on Disney Cruise Line ships, but rather on ships operated by cruise companies which specialize in the expedition cruise industry.
Itineraries for Expedition cruises are more apt to be adjusted on the fly versus those for river cruises, as rapidly changing conditions may greatly impact the ability to continue certain activities as planned.
Private Jet Adventures
Announced in 2022 with a scheduled 2023 inaugural voyage, Adventures by Disney has begun experimenting with an elite new form of travel focusing on private jet travel around the world. Passengers board a VIP-configured private jet (operated by Icelandair) and experience a dedicated flight crew, Disney employed Adventure Guides, Adventure Leaders and a Host – and take off on whirlwind worldwide journeys that last several weeks.
Note: A “Private Jet Adventure” is not the same as a “Private Adventure,” which is described below in the “exclusive groups” section.
Adventures by Disney also regularly offers its existing trips to a subset of travelers:
Adult Exclusive Departures
Many of the Disney Adventures offer select travel dates which are open only to adults. Adventures by Disney is well known for tailoring its trips to the whole family, but they also realize that some folks just want a kid-free vacation every now and then.
Adult Exclusive departures are open only to travelers who will be 18 years old (or older) on the day the trip starts, so families with kids will need to pick a different travel date. The itinerary is substantially the same as the traditional version of the same trip, but is missing any activities that were specifically planned for Junior Adventurers.
For those who want true VIP-style touring, Adventures by Disney sometimes offers Private Adventures. These tours are exactly what the name would imply… an Adventures by Disney trip that’s exclusive just to you and your family/friends (up to 12 travelers). These are offered for only a few of the more popular land adventure itineraries, and may have a somewhat different itinerary due to the unique nature of the smaller group.
As you might imagine, these privately-chartered tours come with a price tag to match.
At the moment, there are no Private Adventures scheduled for 2024.
Note: A “Private Adventure” is not the same as a “Private Jet Adventure.”
