Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World Resort are two of the biggest and best theme park destinations in the world. They’re conveniently located about 10–15 miles apart in Orlando, Florida. If you’re planning a trip to Disney, consider adding at least a day or two at Universal. Home to the classic Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, the popular The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and the groundbreaking Universal Epic Universe, it is an absolute must for anyone visiting Orlando. With three world-class theme parks and a massive water park, Universal is now a true week-long destination.
But what’s the best way to get from Disney World to Universal Orlando if you don’t have your own car? Let’s explore your options!
Best Ways to Travel Between Disney World and Universal Orlando
It’s becoming increasingly popular for Disney World vacations to include plans to visit Universal Orlando Resort. With just a 20 to 30-minute journey between these magical worlds, it’s easier than ever to enjoy both. Here are the top transportation options to get you from Disney to Universal or vice versa:
| Method | Est. Cost | Travel Time | Best For... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber / Lyft | $25 – $50 | 25–45 min | Families, speed, and door-to-gate convenience. |
| LYNX Bus (311) | $2.00 | 45–60 min | Budget "hacks" (Starts at Disney Springs via free Disney bus). |
| Taxi (Mears) | $45 – $65 | 25–40 min | Reliability and avoiding app-based surge pricing. |
| Rental Car | $100+ total | 30–50 min | Exploring beyond the parks (includes gas and $35+ parking). |
*Estimates are one-way (excluding rentals). Costs vary by time of day, seasonal demand, and specific drop-off at Epic Universe vs. the North Campus.
1. Ridesharing Apps (Uber or Lyft)
- Estimated Cost: $25–$45 one-way (Highly dependent on Epic Universe traffic)
- Travel Time: 25–45 minutes
Note on Epic Universe: If you are heading specifically to Epic Universe, be aware that it is located a few miles south of the main Universal Plaza (Islands of Adventure/Universal Studios). Ensure you select the correct drop-off point in your app, as a trip to Epic Universe from Disney property is often faster and slightly cheaper than a trip to the original North Campus.
Ridesharing apps have revolutionized transportation in tourist-heavy areas like Orlando. Here’s why they’re our top choice:
Advantages:
- Generally cheaper than traditional taxis
- Easy to use with smartphone apps
- Readily available in the Orlando area
- Convenient pick-up and drop-off locations
Disadvantages:
- Prices can surge during peak times
- May need to wait for your ride during busy periods
To use these services:
- Download the Uber or Lyft app
- Create an account and link your credit card
- Enter your destination
- Request a ride
On our family trips, we’ve consistently used Uber for transportation between Disney and Universal. It’s been reliable, convenient, and cost-effective. The drivers are usually familiar with the theme park areas, making for smooth rides. In my opinion, it’s by far the best option for most families.
Check both Uber and Lyft for the best rates, as prices can vary between the two services. If you want to get an estimate for an Uber fare from your hotel to Universal Orlando, click HERE.
⚠️ 2026 Epic Universe Warning
Universal Orlando is now split into two distinct campuses located about 4 miles apart. Selecting the wrong destination in your app can cost you 20+ minutes in traffic:
- For Studios, Islands, or Volcano Bay: Search for "Universal CityWalk" (6000 Universal Blvd). You will be dropped off at the North Parking Garage (5th floor).
- For Epic Universe: Search specifically for "Epic Universe Rideshare" (1201 Epic Blvd) or the "Helios Grand Hotel."
Pro Tip: Ensure you double-check your selection! A trip to Epic Universe from Disney property is often faster and slightly cheaper than the North Campus, but if you accidentally go to the wrong one, look for the free "Inter-Park Shuttle" bus to get across property.
2. The “Budget Hack”: LYNX Bus (Link 311)
- Estimated Cost: $2 per person
- Travel Time: 30–45 minutes
New for 2025/2026, the LYNX Link 311 is a specialized “Express” bus route that connects the Disney Springs Transfer Center directly to Universal Epic Universe and the Destination Parkway area.
- Best For: Solo travelers, couples, or anyone looking to save $40+ on a round trip.
- Pros: Only $2 per ride; brand new, air-conditioned buses; runs every 30 minutes (approx. 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM).
- Cons: You must get yourself to Disney Springs first (using Disney’s free resort buses); it only drops off at the Epic Universe campus. To get to the original Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure, you’ll need to transfer to a free Universal inter-park shuttle once you arrive at the Epic Universe bus loop. This adds about 15–20 minutes to your trip, so we only recommend the LYNX bus if your primary destination for the day is Epic Universe or if you have plenty of time to spare.
3. Taxi Service
- Estimated Cost: $45-$60 one-way
- Travel Time: 20-30 minutes
Traditional taxi services offer a familiar option for those who prefer not to use smartphone apps.
Advantages:
- No need for a smartphone or app
- Readily available outside most hotels
- Fixed rates (not subject to surge pricing)
Disadvantages:
- Generally more expensive than ridesharing
- May need to wait in line during peak times
Mears Transportation Group (☎ 888-983-3346; mearstransportation.com) is the largest taxi service provider in the Orlando area. They operate several brands, including Checker Cab, Yellow Cab Company, and City Cab Company, all with identical rates. Most taxis carry four to eight passengers, depending on the vehicle.
Personal Opinion: While taxis are a reliable option, I find them to be an unnecessary expense compared to ridesharing. The higher cost doesn’t come with any significant benefits, and in my experience, the convenience factor is actually lower than with Uber or Lyft.
4. Rent a Car
- Estimated Cost: $45+ per day (plus parking fees)
- Travel Time: 20-30 minutes (plus time for pickup and return)
If you love the freedom to explore, renting a car might seem like a good option. However, in my opinion, it’s often more trouble than it’s worth for most visitors.
Advantages:
- Flexibility to explore Orlando beyond the theme parks
- No waiting for rides or dealing with surge pricing
- It can be cost-effective for larger groups or longer stays
Disadvantages:
- Most expensive option when factoring in rental costs, fuel, and parking fees
- Need to navigate unfamiliar roads and Orlando traffic
- Parking at Universal Orlando costs $32–$75 per day (Prices vary between standard and prime parking, and rates often fluctuate during peak holiday weeks).
Disney’s Car Care Center offers car rentals near Magic Kingdom theme park:
- Phone: (407) 824-0976
- Hours: Monday-Friday 7 AM-7 PM, Saturday 7 AM-4 PM, Sunday 8 AM-3 PM
- Offers Alamo Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental services
You can schedule a complimentary shuttle from your Disney resort to the car care center by calling 407-824-3470.
Unless you’re planning extensive exploration beyond the theme parks, renting a car is often an unnecessary hassle. The costs add up quickly, and dealing with parking can eat into your valuable vacation time.
Important Note on Shuttle Services
As of 2026, there are still no direct, scheduled “inter-resort” shuttles between Disney World and Universal Orlando hotels. While some third-party “split-stay” luggage transfer services have emerged, your best bet for person-to-person transfer remains private transport.
For airport transfers:
- Mears Connect offers transportation services from Orlando International Airport to Disney World (the closest airport to Disney World)
- Super Star Shuttle (a Mears sister company) provides transportation from Orlando International Airport to Universal Orlando Resort (Phone: 800-823-4733)
The lack of direct shuttle services between the parks is disappointing. In my view, this makes ridesharing apps an even more attractive option for park-to-park transportation.
🚆 What about the Train?
While the Brightline train connects Orlando International (MCO) to South Florida, and plans for the "Sunshine Corridor" (connecting Disney to the Epic Universe/Convention Center area) are in development, there is currently no rail service that connects the two resort areas directly. For your 2026 trip, stick to the road!
Tips for a Smooth Transfer
- Plan your travel time wisely, accounting for Orlando traffic, especially during peak hours.
- If using ridesharing, check the app for any surge pricing before booking
- For taxis, confirm the fare before starting your journey
- If renting a car, familiarize yourself with parking options and costs at both resorts
- Always allow extra time for unexpected delays, especially if you have reservations or scheduled activities
The Verdict – Take an Uber or Lyft!
We think ridesharing remains the absolute best option for traveling between Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort in 2026. Not only are Uber and Lyft typically the most cost-effective, but they also offer the flexibility needed to navigate Universal’s now-expanded campus.
During our most recent trip, we used Uber to jump between Disney and the new Epic Universe. Even with the increased traffic around the Convention Center area, it was significantly faster than navigating the massive new parking lots ourselves. For a stress-free vacation, let someone else handle the I-4 congestion while you focus on your virtual queue strategy!
Enjoy your trip!

What if you have a child that needs a car seat ?
Hi Reneee. As long as you request them, Uber DOES offer car seats: https://www.uber.com/us/en/ride/car-seat. Same goes for car rental companies, but I would call ahead just to be sure. As far as Mears shuttle goes, they are accommodating but I’d call them ahead of time at (407) 423-5566 to confirm directly with the company. Hope that helps. Enjoy your trip!
The shuttle service you mentioned in paragraph 2 above via Mears that stops at various resorts until filled then on to Universal – how are those reserved – in advance, via WDW resorts, or what exactly? I went to the Mears website but only found very expensive, private limo-like service.
Hey Marille! I just wanted to let you know that we’ve updated the page with the latest information. Unfortunately, Mears Connect or Super Star Shuttle does NOT provide shuttle services between Universal Orlando and Disney World. If you need to travel between Universal Resort and Disney World and want a Mears option, your best bets are taking a Taxi with Mears or arranging a private vehicle through Mears. Just keep in mind that these options are pricier compared to ridesharing (Uber/Lyft) or standard taxis.
I stayed at Animal Kingdom and the best tip I can give is to get the free bus to Disney Springs and walk past Starbucks to the other side of Disney Springs. You will then find a Taxi Rank. About 16 dollars to SeaWorld and $19 to Univeral Studios. Same return get the taxi to drop you off at Disney Springs and then a free bus to your hotel
